do you mean cardboard as a background for taking photos of minis or a digital background when editing an existing photo of a mini?

I use Photoshop. It's easy just choose Gradient option and decide between radious and kinds of gradient ;) And it's done

as background at taking pics I use uni-coloured thick paper.

what is also nice if one has the chance to, is to put the mini outside in real nature (maybe on a small post), focus on mini and get trees/grass/bushes/sky blurred in the background

(replacing a background later in an picture editing program will look artificial/not quite right most of the times ...)

looks as if your background layer's opacity is set to something less than 100%.
go to the layer palette, select the layer, look at top of the palette bar and see what percentage it shows. either type in 100% or use the slider to adjust it.

apart from that: your aragorn shows a white 'aura'/border all around him.
(I am sure all good tutorials tell you about that)

in short: that is because you selected/cut the original background without feathering/smoothing the edges.

there are a several ways to do that before of after cutting...

e.g. when having selected a tool you can choose in the top bar of photoshop anti-alias which will already give you some nice edge.
also the feathering field let's you set some border width of feathering/smoothening while selecting

then: in the top menu 'Select' you'll find subitem 'Feather' where you can set the border width that will get smoothenend after you have made your selection (careful: too large amount will create a romantic look)

and you can Clean the edges e.g. after having pasted a selection, etc.

but the two tips above should do the job.

I don't have Photoshop, but do all presentations with MS Publisher, works well, not as good as Photoshop, but quite effective though...
