Mantic are at it again: they have created a game that is set in the Universe of Warpath but has a board structure and rules something along the line of Dwarf King's Hold, though with more terrain and levels. It came out of the blue for me - I knew they had mentioned something for 2013 but I thought that would be much later.
It has only been running for under 2 days now and has shattered the initial $50,000 goal (currently at $190,000 and rising fast). Jake Thornton wrote the rule for this one.
Have a look - maybe joining the Kickstarter does not appeal but the game itself could be a neat alternative to the ponderous pseudo-Gothic mainstream... so you might want to try it out in late 2013/early 2014.

One thing I really admire about Mantic: they really do take on board the feedback and ideas from gamers. Dreadball and Kings Of War had very, very successful Kickstarters in 2012. And they don't cost as much as certain brands...

I'm in :) It's going to be a hectic 4th quarter with Rivet Wars, Torn and now Deadzone....o'h and probably War of the Worlds this week too :)

I am trying to resist... trying... well, we will see. The terrain has enormous appeal and I like Dreadball plus Jake Thornton writes the rules for this one.

Mantic are having a really good run so far with this one - over 2000 backers and nearly $315k in just 1 week!
Still resisting....

Resistance is futile, you can now download Alpha test rules BTW :)

And Brian Blessed (the real one) is following it on Twitter. There is a strong push for a special sculpt based on him to be put in as an add-on stretch goal. And someone has pledged $5000 which gives them dibs on a sculpt. I wonder....
The rules look very good - I like a game where you get on with it instead of having to deal with a tabletop cheese lawyer who has spent years coming up with power armies and cunning ploys that exploit bizarre holes in the rules. I have encountered them in WH40K an awful lot which is one reason why I am getting out of it permanently. (Other reasons - GW pricing, lack of storage space)

We played three games this afternoon and I must say am most impressed, a very quick and easy system with a lot of tactical choices. Definitely keeping my pledge in.

Great - I had no chance to try it out as our house was under siege by annoying people. Only got rid of them a short time ago. And another stretch goal is done!

And I am in (Assault to start with). Call it post-traumatic shopping therapy - that's my excuse anyway!

Hi Dorth, just noticed you on the Kickstarter and wondered 'Is that THE Dorth?' :)

I'm all in with this one, 6x4 worth of mats and will grab enough terrain to cover it. This will supplement my Forge Father army nicely and looks like Amy is going to get the Rebs when they get their Warpath release. Also we're heading to the Mantic open day on Saturday, can't wait!

Of course I am The Dorth! Who the Hell else wanders Middle-earth with The B a z o o k a? I like the look and feel of Deadzone - Warren from BOW summed it up most eloquently when he said that the rules did not get in the way of the fun (or words to that effect).
I also like the Brian Blessed Fan Club - it is hilarious and will be even more so if they do end up sculpting a figure of the man himself as a playable character in the game.
You lucky swine! I am headed to an event I would really rather NOT be attending. Give my regards to Ronnie and Jake if you see them. They are doing great things with Dreadball and Deadzone.

And now we have become famous for the humour in the Comments - guess who is centre screen when terrainaholic shows the Deadzone KS on Youtube? Me!

Like he says, drop in, even if only to watch the Brian Blessed Crew in action. But it has the makings of a great game - the rules are on the main page if you want to try them out - where it says Deadzone Alpha Rules:

If anything, Deadzone KS is even madder than the maddest moments here. Well,...
:)
I hope it does very, very well as it would be great to have a couple of neat, quick sci-fi games available for when the time is available (Sedition Wars and Dreadball too)

If anyone wants the quick run down on this game, Beasts of War interviewed Jake and James M (the M is important!) - http://www.beastsofwar.com/deadzone/dea ... es-hewitt/

Post subject:  Re: Deadzone on Kickstarter

Last night, Ronnie (the guy who created Mantic Games) came on the Deadzone Kickstarter to chat to the backers, get ideas, tease us with stretch goals and hints of things to come. Most importantly, he listened to people. he listened to people who are passionate about good quality games - all aspects from the game mechanics, the background 'fluff', the minis, the new terrain - everything! This is such a refreshing experience - not from Mantic as they have always supported fan involvement - no, I am comparing the experience to the apparent wall of silence we get from A.N.Other company.
The Deadzone kickstarter has 11 more days to run. I will be pledging more on it than I put into LotR or The Hobbit in the past 3 years as I see this as a fun and superior game to the 400lb cheese gorilla in the room. I am not giving up on Middle-earth - that will NEVER happen.

Yup this is going to be fun when we hit the last few days, it will certainly be interesting to see how far this is actually go as the pace has just begun to pick up again (not that just shy of $550k is shabby in any way).
It feels odd not having my Brian avatar now...

Past $550K and on to the cannons! (I may start a campaign for The Baz00ka) :)
