Post subject:  Bywater Mill WIP
I wanted to work on this project for a while. I decided to use the new rubble molds from Hirst Arts. I decided to use wood for the core of the building and Pink foam for the base.

I began by cutting three 4" by 4" and one 4" by6" end parts with 45% peaks I cut and two 2" by 8" wall sections.I used a hot glue gun to tack the parts so that I can make changes. The model is larger than I realised it would be.

I did not notice that the water side roof line was different until I made the paper template. I will change it tomorrow.

You can see from the two reference photos why I need to change it.

This is a photo of the recent changes to the mill. Some of the changes are interesting. I may use some of them.

I also have cast enough of the bridge mold #259 to start thinking about adding it to the wok schedule. I am using the arches for chimneys and may not have enough ready.

Looking forward to your progress on this. Not sure if I like the newer look of the mill. I like the roofline on the older better and the grasses vs the dock by the wheel. This flythrough might help you, though it shows the older look.

I can make the dock as a modular part. I may use the new back side window details on another building.

I cut the core parts from a old left over stair step. I did not take the extra 8 hours to glue the wood together and plane it to the correct thickness. I ran a 4" wide section through the Table saw and cut a 45 degree angles on both sides. I did the same with a 2" wide section. The roof thatch will be teddy bear fur so no need for hours of extra drying time that would be involved in a more precise cut. I used a miter saw for the 45 degree roof angles.

I want a very rigid core for this. There would bo reason not to use foam core board if you only have hand tools.Drywall filler and balsa wood would work fine for the details.I am using a very thin cast so I am going to over kill this project,at least until I have more experience with the new molds.

I tacked the end on with hot glue. The cast boards are thin I may try a 4 bot cast or use basswood.

The new photo has a better detail of the windows.
More overhang on the thatch will look better. I am glad I tacked it with hot glue.

I was curious why the dock was added to the mill so I wrote Hobbiton Tours - here is their reply:

"As our maintenance department occasionally works out on the lake we decided to incorporate a dock for them to use along with function groups to access during dinners we serve in the mill."

And knowing is half the battle ☺

I really like the new Hirst Arts molds. I decide to order Stucco Panel Mold #251 after I started working on the Mill model.

I like the gothic sewer.

This is a room I have been working on using some of the 4 bot cavern floor molds mixed with Hirst Arts.

I was able to get more teddy bear fur at the fabric store. I will add a few small details. I am going to cut out the groundwork so I can begin the water side of the mill.

I cut a 1/2 inch off of the end parts and the walls. I will need to redo the details.

I am going to use the new stone pattern instead of the larger field stone.

The stone wall ends at the door corner. I will trim the base. The wall also curves a bit. I may have to use a 4bot cast for that.

I agree. The cobblestone looks out of place. I did check out the 4bot molds, some really cool stuff there! Do you have any photos of how the cavern castings stack? The website is woefully under-photo'd.

Also loving the cave/sewer you made. I'm going to have to copy that dwarven forge grate for my sewers. It's funny because I was thinking of doing a big round effluent grate in the wall before I saw the picture.

I made the walls so that the round column parts were on one side and the open wall parts were on the opposite side so that I could always fit them end to end.

The 4 bot stalagmite cast and cavern floor tiles with some of my normal brown and under dark style DF tiles. You can see the 4 bot, blue gray, blends well with the DF tiles.

I have only made a few cast of the new 4 bot village molds. I am going to use the wall on center on a few. I will make a few adapters for the normal wall on edge DF style. I think the wall on center style will work better for Massive Darkness and Black Plague and the new 4 edition D&D Middle Earth role play.

I have been side tracked painting orc villagers for a role playing game. I found some more teddybear fur at JoAnn's Fabric.

I was trapped in the diorama mode and forgot this is going to be gaming terrain. I decided to use the 4 bot windows instead of scratch built details no one can see. I also needed to leave room for bases on the model.

1 1/2" should be enough for Most bases. I am going to use a stone floor pattern I have not cast yet instead of the tiles in the photo.

I will decide if the mill wall will be 3/4" or 1" thick when the water wheel I ordered gets here. I may cut the bottom off of the PVC pipe water wheel or even have one laser cut.

I will paint the major parts before I attach them. I need to decide how I want to do the bridge before I finalise the base.
