Currently working on isenguard and some moria troops and of course the fellowship. i quite like varying which model im painting as it holds my interest further and lets stuff dry.

this is the first time ive painted in the last 16 years so any tips are most welcome!

Uruk-hai finished to the level i can at the moment, plastic versions but look ok in all the different stances, using an iphone so it failed to focus on anything specific. Still need to do the bases, unsure on how yet. ( Keen eyed among you might spot magical trevor in the background :) )

Image

2 uruks with a slightly better focus from camera

Image

Gandalf (finecast), really struggling to get the cape right, i think i am about happy now with the outer cape, he looks a bit like a zombie with no eyes but still lots to do on this one!

Image

Witch King on fell beast: struggled with both parts of this model tbh, finally happy enough to say it is almost done, as its metal in handling it i chipped some of the paint off so it needs quite a bit of touching up and the saddle straps still need doing. might try and glue some reins to the mouth of the beast as well... wings i tried to highlight in a dark green but it doesnt really come out too well in rl or photos! :(

Really nice...
I love the symbols on the uruk's helmets and Gandalf's hat...

The Uruks look very nice. Always liked the Uruk-hai models as they were the ones in the window of GW when I started out in 2003. The Witch King also looks nice. One tip for the reins if you dont fancy making them is to use a bit of model ship chain or some old jewellry chain to give it a Mordor look. The Gandalf looks crisp as well. One suggestion for the uruks (you may have done it already and the camera hasnt picked it up) is to highlight the very edges of the armour in chainmail just to give it a bit of a contrast. If it is too bright, wash over with Badab Black, or Devlan mud or even thinned chaos black. However, they already have that forge carbon look of an Isengarder!
Keep up the good work and keep us posted.

chain from some old jewellery is a very good idea, i was trying to use some plastic tie but it doesnt look 'fitting' like you say. I shall raid the mrs jewellery stash this evening and blame you for any consequence, ta :)

The Uruks are really nice and the white hand on the helmet looks just awesome!!
As for the fell beast, I see that there is a gap between the wings and the body. You had better fill it with green stuff, as it doesn't look very well..

Looks nice. for the reins you could try dental floss, greenstuff or flattened staples. Look at awcho's fell beast guide for tips or ukfreddybear's mounted saruman conversion article, both on this site. Gandalf is really well done! 8)

LOL! Can't possibly comment where mine came from but I have been eying up my girlfriends jewellry (stuff she made herself) for some suitable materials for my orcs! Suppose I have it in mind at xmas/birthdays when I buy her a cahin. It isnt so much 'will she like this?' it is 'will I find a use for this in a model making capacity in years to come?!!!!!' :-D

The blending on Gandalf is lovely. How are the finecast fellowship?

The uruk's armour is really nice. Very realistic. Gandalf looks great too - maybe a little bit more contrast in the cloak? I can just pick out the dark green on the fell beast wings - did you dry brush that on? I have the same model waiting to paint, so will check out your thread again when I finally get to it. Would love to see what you do with the reins. 8)

Well i have found a decent chain so hoping to put that on and sort out some green stuff for the gap in the wings, i did dry brush the green on but as i said it is incredibly dark

Gandalf is finished as is gimli apart from bases, i will post more pictures this evening.

Im loving the finecast models, feel nice to paint and tons of detail, however as ive only recently got into this i dont have much to compare to, i have been between finecast and plastic though i do have a metal vault warden to sort out :)

Ok, quick update, the chain is on the dragon, dry brushed boltgun metal with some rust near the mouth peice, was a complete pain with the glue but i think the effect is quite good, also a small glimpse of the base as i didnt like the one it came with, never 'based' anything before properly so still experimenting.

finished gimli, got shining gold paint now and thought he deserved a bit of that :)

enjoy...

I have also started the cave troll from the mom box set, looks ok but the mould lines are horrible :(
Also about half way through the goblins, not really enjoying painting those as much but im breaking that up with the aragorn painting challenge to keep things interesting.

The chain is a nice addition to the witch-king, good job :)

Also nice work with the painting on Gimli, a good base should finish him off nicely.

Thanks for the comments, couple more ive finished, having nabbed the mom set off ebay ive been working through the goblins and the cave troll you get, not really enjoying the goblins and i think that shows in the painting but they are ok for tabletop and will probably look better when there is 20 of them (or however many you get! feels like 100!)

Cave troll was much more interesting to paint

Nice painting again but with the cave troll it would have looked better if you'd filled in the gaps with greenstuff before starting on him :)

in hindsight i think your right, i didnt glue him because it was such a tight fit so i might go back and do that
