Totally agree with the above. That red and gold armour is perfect. Quite often you see a much too bright red with this model but you've hit the nail on the head.

Love Theoden, really, really nice.
Out of interest does priming in grey make much of a difference to the painting of the model? I usually prime with black instead.

I don't think it matters to the end result. Instead the type of priming will influence what techniques are most appropriate to use. If black works with how you paint then there's not much benefit to changing to grey or white.

Great Théoden. Your faces are amazing. I still have Théoden to paint so will be using your tutorial for guidance thanks.

I made a couple of youtube videos of the mirkwood rangers. You might want to turn the volume down for these. Apparently the turntable makes the same noise as a small plane.

Hello everyone.

I thought I'd share some models I recently painted for a commission:

Your Nazguls are without doubt the best I 've ever seen. Would be grateful if you share what colors you used on wings, there must be a recipe there.

Wonderful pieces, MMS. Lovely tones in the wings and skin. Reminds me I have my old metal Ringwraith on Fell Beast still in its pristine box. I'll paint it sometime...

That is gorgeous work - much more texture and visual interest than the usual darker palette. The wing membranes are superb.

I really like the blueish tint on the Ringwraiths. 8) The bases are a little too simple for my taste. But I'm guessing that is what the client wanted.

I started by priming the wings white. The rest of the model was given a grey on black priming but for the wings I wanted to have a very bright starting point.

I mixed up a pale green from thrall flesh (p3) and off white (vmc) and applied this as a basecoat.

The remaining steps involved applying very dilute layers of different colours. I managed to destroy quite a good brush doing this so I'd recommend using an old brush. Also, don't apply too much paint at once. It takes longer to dry (and I used a hairdryer to speed up the process) and can give unwanted results if it pools anywhere. The hairdryer also helps to keep the finish matte for a dry leathery look. But you still want enough to cover the area in one pass to minimise visible brush strokes.

The first wash was yellow brown/steel legion (gw) all over the wing section.

The second wash was green camo wash (gw) again all over.

I then applied 3/4 layers of dark red - hull red(vmc)/black mix. This was mainly towards the long edge of the wing. When the paint was still wet I would clean my brush and apply a small amount of water along the transition point to drag the paint out. I'm not sure I've explained that very well but the general idea is to avoid any harsh lines between the different colours.

To finish I added more black to the dark red and used this to darken a few areas.

I painted the robes first using an airbrush

Green - Military green (vmn), olive green (vmc), olive green + dark sand (vmc)
Yellow - Bastion grey (p3), hammerfall khaki (p3), khaki + dark sand

I used the 2nd highlight colour to edge highlight and a mix of black + base colour to outline the robes.

I applied thin layers of red, magenta or purple to the tails.

The hoods and other dark brown parts
Basecolour of charred brown (vgc)
Charred brown + black was applied as an outline and to the folds.
Highlights were done by stippling flat earth(vmc) and dark sand.
The highlights were smoothed out with a thin layer of smoke (vmc).

The light brown parts
Basecolour of rucksack tan (p3)
Wash of charred brown
Highlight layer of rucksack tan + dark sand.
Edge highligh of dark sand.

Bow and arrows
Basecolour black
Highlight layer black + blue green (vmc)
Edge highlight blue green
Edge highlight blue green + off white (vmc)

Skin
Basecolour ryn flesh (p3)
Wash bugman's glow (gw)
Further shading was done with bugman's glow + a small amount of black focusing around the eye's nose and hair line.
Highlight layer ryn flesh
Edge highlight light off white

I've not painted a lot of lotr recently. My own collection is almost all painted so its only with commissions that I get to paint anything from middle earth.

I did have a commission for a bunch of mirkwood rangers using the same colour scheme I used for my own.
