Great stuff as usual. What did you do different in your painting style? I can see the difference stylistically, but can't pick out the change in technique or product.

The main change was to switch back to using a plastic palette. Turns out one of the causes of my painting frustrations was that I was inadvertently diluting my paints too much. I suspect this was because I use quite large brushes and when I was mixing on my wet palette I was introducing a lot of additional water. A bit stupid really but I had been painting this way for so long that I had accepted it as normal.

There were a few other changes all with the intention of making the commission work a lot easier by being more systematic.

Anyway I painted up Biblo this morning:

Gone full circle eh. Nice bilbo. Face is triffic.

Very high standard of painting. I love these transitions between lighter and darker areas.
Face is amazing, Bilbo's sword, too.

I use a plastic paint tray and to be honest I see no reason to change to a wet palette. Using a medium I can work blends between colours pretty well. If anything I see a wet palette as a bit quicker, but only if you use it right.
Lovely Bilbo, the extreme colour highlight is something I should work on, I tend to transition slowly to a highlight, more blending, or perhaps that's just my style.

I used to spend a long time painting many dilute layers to get a desired blending but would always be disappointed by the lack of contrast. For Bilbo however I used all of four layers and whilst it won't win any awards it's certainly good enough for my cabinet which no one else gets to see. :)

I didn't have much time for painting today as I had to clear the snow off my driveway. Just done the face and armour on Thorin.

Oh man. Thorin's face looks so natural. Perfect.
Looking forward next updates from progress done.

I've finished off Thorin.

There are few things that I'll have to think on how to improve such as painting black hair and whether to continue painting such reflective metals.

And yes I know the sword is wonky. Trying to get the hilt, blade and that hole thing lined up proved to be very difficult and I gave up before I threw the model against the wall.

I was looking at your Blog, will be checing that more often as I work through my Thorins Co. Very cool.

I think Thorin looks great, I understand your critical eye judges more strictly than mine which is why you keep to such a high standard. The blue in the eyes really pops.

Black needs a very fine highlight of white but it's a difficult colour.
I bought the Scale 75 Black and White set, it's brilliant for this and surprising what colours are in the set.

Thorin's face is brilliant (not to say the rest of him isn't).

I've repainted my Galadriel. The model has been into the simple green twice now so it's not in the best condition but it's turned out a lot better than previously.

I have crossed another Hobbit character off my list with Girion now completed.

All very nice. I echo the comment about galadriel's hair too

Her hair is excellent yes but it's the tone of the arms that do it for me and really stand out. Very lifelike!

Also Girion looks rad. You don't often see such rich colours like that, they compliment each other extremely well and you have really made them 'pop'.
