I think it was about 3-4 months ago you made the move for better painting and my word how you have developed. You have developed quicker than I thought you could and each piece you show is full of new creativity. From light source to blending to glazing its all a treat to behold.
You have my full appreciation at what you have done and long may this continue.

Thanks! It's not been easy and at times I've felt as though I'm starting over with all the anguish that goes into learning new techniques. The kind comments I receive on here is a big motivator and whilst I occasionally think about moving away from lotr in favour of a different range the one ring community keeps bringing me back. I know there's been talk of a lot of negativity on here but I can't think of a better place. when I look back to how much I've developed since joining it's pretty amazing and the encouragement I receive on here has been a major factor.

as for my approach I start with a base coat and then use lots of glazes to add contrast and detail. the initial shading and highlighting is quite rough with my paints diluted approximately 1 part paint to 2 parts water. this is mainly to have a quick outline of the light placement. I then use increasingly more dilute glazes to refine the transitions switching back and forth between light, dark and midtones.

Those trolls you have there are just superb, they are mind blowingly realistic, I have to say without a doubt that they are some of the favourite models I have ever seen painted they are just beautiful. The skin is exceptionally smooth and beautifully glazed and toned, keep up the outstanding work mt friend, you are improving in leaps and bounds :)

hello again. sorry for the delay in replying. after my last post real life stuff took over and I couldn't concentrate on painting. I've got back into things with some non-lotr stuff and today started on the white council saruman. some form of tutorial on the trolls will be forthcoming eventually. at least I have improved my photography (milk cartons here are nice and wide)

Welcome back MMS. Can I ask about the grainy texture, has a spray undercoat caused this or is it how the figure is ?

That was the spray paint. I preshaded the model using first an all over grey coat and then sprayed white from above. The white layer didn't turn out so great as you can see.

I finished off the model this morning in a quick and efficient manner.

Really excellent. I had hoped the model had more potential than the official paint job, and you've shown it has. Just one minor thing though, his left hand looks a little webbed I think. All in all though another top job.

Yep, really nice painting and a different colour scheme that works really nice. I can't work out that sculpt on the left hand though, shall we say, unusual....

I've had that problem with white primer. I usually do a ten second test spray to clear out the nozzle before letting it touch the model otherwise it comes out like fake snow.

Great looking Saruman mate.

Yeah the left hand is weirdly sculpted. the model is pretty nice otherwise. I found the old metal version in my big box of unpainted dudes and it's noticeable how much more refined the fine cast is.

Keep in mind that hmm... this new saruman was made not even 1 year ago, the "old saruman" got years so the method for creating were quite older and not so detailed, still I think the old saruman model is still suberb

I wouldn't disagree with you on that. the old models for have a very iconic look.
