There is no beating this man! You must have gone through at least one two cans of the stuff  Well I don't mind being beat by a 'gaarew' though I didn't predict you would throw Moria into the jumble, I was banking on the Fall of the Necromancer minis only  Ooh I can see some Morannon orcs as well and are they Black Numenorians :o

Its been a while since I update this thread, so heres a brief round up of whats been happening. Work on the Moria terrain has begun again and this time there is only a few coats to go, more on that in the other thread. I've been slowly working away at the wall sections, carving the brick work and have 3 out of the 4 intended wall pieces built.

I've also been building up my Ruin of Arnor collection too. Converting a load of orcs has taken up most of my time, pics of those coming soon. I've also been painting the Barrow Wights and Spectres, finally finishing the former yesterday. I'm happy with the way they've turned out, though the pics again aren't great

The plan now is to finish the spectres, begin painting the orc hordes and then start on Burhdur :D

C+C appreciated

Are you implying I look like a Barrow Wight? I say! Thats a bit rude! :)

Thanks for the comments everyone. Heres an update on my current project. I'm deviating from the Terrain making for a while to concentrate on painting up a bunch of models so as to be able to enjoy a few of the smaller scenarios. With the superb excel doc John (gaarew) sent me I was able to finalise what I needed. So the following pics are a combination of Dol Guldur and Angmar minis. Please note, I am aware they cannot ally

Nasty Creatures
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1000035.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1000035.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1000034.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1000034.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Wild Wargs
9 Wild Wargs and the Cheiftain painted up using black undercoat, Scorched Brown, Bestial Brown, black wash, Bestial Brown and then final highlight of Bestial Brown + Fortress Grey. These guys still need basing.
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1000027.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1000027.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Spectres
Undercoated black, armour painted Boltgun Metal, Mithril Silver and Shining Gold, cloth painted black again and then Regal Blue for the elven spectres. Lots to do on these guys.
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1000047.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1000047.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Orc Conversions
The archers aren't conversions, just there to show you guys what needs to be painted still :?
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1000040.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1000040.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Buhrdur
Undercoated black, first layer of Scorched Brown
<a href="http://s194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/?action=view¤t=P1000042.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i194.photobucket.com/albums/z261/lorderkenbrand/P1000042.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I'm now half way through basing the wargs so hopefully pics to come tonight. I have also started on the bats (thanks to Sean for the trade)

I'll post a pic of both armies (Angmar and Dol Guldur) once I have half of the models painted. Also not mentioned but painted are Gulahar, 2 Barrow Wights, 40 orcs, 12 Warg Riders, Spider Queen, 2 Cave Trolls, Mordor Troll Cheiftain and a Mordor Troll. I know there isn't much in the photos but C+C welcome :D

Wow this thread totally makes me want to start a ruin of arnor army. I'm loving the painting, the spectres armour looks especially nice.

One thing, the blood on the wild warg cheiftain's base looks a little bright to me, I expect you used blood red, you'd think it would be the right color, but my blood is never that bright :P. It looks ok, but i'd darken it a bit if I were you.

Dylan.

Thanks you two! Hmm the blood was bothering me too so I 'cleaned it up' so to speak as I did the bases. John if you would like to teach me (for free  ) I am all ears, however tell me what you think of the bases now and if I need the blood spatter. Casting my mind back I was impressed with your Wild Warg Cheiftain John, but I don't want to end up 'messing' the base up again

Pics to follow shortly

I will see what I can do to get an article sorted out concerning blood and gore effects, but I really need a suitable model, the only ones I can think of that fit the bill are Ugluk or Berserkers. If I catch you on MSN I'll give you a brief explanation.

As it looks at the moment, being brutally honest, it look like the WWC has dragged off some poor soul that was in the middle of painting a postbox... The blood is far too bright, and thick. What you really want to have is a 'less is more' approach. Blood is fairly dark until it is oxygenated, but you still don't want such a vivid colour.

I would advise for the time being to get rid of the blood, and just have him based like the rest of the Wargs, then at some point in the future, you can do some more realistic effects.

Also, why is the WWC on a 60mm base by the way?

:D

When I originally bought the item I was about 14/15 and so a little stupid back then (no 'you still are' jokes please  JOHN! :P ). I guess I must have thought it looked better. Do GW still class this size base as 'illegal'? It's such as ridiculous rule, it's a base, how can it possibly be illegal? :?

Anyway thanks all for the kind words and tips. I managed to base them yesterday but didn't get around to posting pics, so here they are. I've used Static Grass along with some newly purchased Clump Foliage.

Ooh and I also completed my Ringwraiths :D Not much to them thanks to their predominantly black complextion but the folds were a little tricky. I applied a couple of washes of black once the grey highlights were down to blend the highlights in.

I am pretty sure in tournaments they would as a large base would allow you to get into combat more quickly, however the draw back is you are able to be surrounded by more models.

Post subject:

That's looking a lot better now Jack.

Re the base size, going by a 40k perspective, a larger base, as Dave said is generally not too much of a problem AFAIK, because although it allows you into combat with more models, it also allows more models into combat with you. Putting a model on a smaller base than that supplied is a big no-no however.

Although I think this may have changed, as I was discussing how to base my new Ork Bikers, seeing as they aren't supplied with bases. I wasn't sure about giving them 60mm bases, or waiting to see if I could get some of the new round ended cavalry bases from the Scout Bikers, when one of the staff said they should be on standard cavalry bases as that's how bikes were supplied, but Ork Bikes don't come with bases, and aren't based in the Codex photos.

What he told me was that if it's not on the standard supplied base size, you need your opponents permission to use it.

Ooh just measured it and its 50mm unless the ruler is wrong. The Mordor Troll Cheiftain base is 60mm so am I missing something or is the Troll base illegal too? Is 50mm illegal? The Gwaihir I have also sits on a 50mm base.

Ah well, I'll have to use all my charm to get that permission then
