Oh, the cunning use of spare parts - marvellous! The trolls are fantastic, and the dwarves look great - probably closer to how I imagined them from reading the book WAAAAY back (in 1974).
The spare parts ploy is a stroke of genius. Very well done!

Thanks guys, it was fun to go back through my photo archive and see what I came up with.

Unfortunately, I do not know where to get the Thomorrillian statues. Shortly after I bought mine I noticed they weren't on his website anymore.

The spare parts idea was a necessity as I was coming up a couple Woses short of my full army  So one careful cut and a single model was useful as two :)

A few more WIP conversions...

Some items have disappeared from Thomarillions's site in the past couple of years. Let's just say these were very much in the Middle-earth style.

The Osgiliath ruins look very effective. You must have need quite a few sets to put that together though.

The conversions are great too, I like the first Orc with the bow.

I just seen this thread for the first time. Amazing. I love the Far Harad you have way back in here. I have the same thought about the skin tones for them you did so long ago. I am not feeling so original now :x I just finished up painting 4 Half Trolls using the old Far Harad Sourcebook. I have my sights set on the Mahud Warriors/Raiders next. And then one of my 3 Mumakil ungggghhh.... Thank you for the inspiration!

Well, its time to blow the dust off this thread with some new WIP! I'm preparing a new army based on the theme "Bilbo's Birthday Bash". For those that know me, you know that I love as many conversions as I can squeeze into an army and whenever possible I try not to have the same model repeated twice in my army. Well this new army created quite the little conversion opportunities. When its all done, I'll 39 different Hobbits... there is a special treat coming towards the end of the army but that's a different topic for a different day.

Here's a few of the WIP conversions... most of these are ready to be primed.

First some simple head conversions - slice off the hat and add some hair:
Image

Next, we have a model that started as Farmer Maggot and got a new head. The weapon arm came from the two handed hammer from the Militia model. I flattened out the hammer and filed it down to make an axe:
Image

Here's what you do with the other parts of the Farmer Maggot and Militia model:
Image

Next up some parts from Fatty Bolger and Paladin Took. Added some suspenders and gave Fatty a haircut. He still needs a weapon but I'm not sure what to do with that yet:
Image

This one is a mounted Bullroarer Took and the legs from another Hobbit. I don't remember which one. I was shocked at well they matched. Only added a bit of greenstuff as a belt to hide the seam:
Image

Here's a charging Militia. Not a very happy party guest it seems... must be a Sackville-Baggins:
Image

Here's my favorite of the bunch. No face but sure has a lot of character. Someone had a bit too much to drink:
Image

Here's a group shot with a couple others that I didn't feature:

More to come! I've also got a few conversions for a couple of the heroes (Frodo, Pippin, and Merry). Also... special model for Rosie Cotton, assuming I can pull it off.

I must say I love this thread! Your ideas for converting miniatures are excellent and fortunately you really have the skills to transform an idea into a good looking miniature! I particularly like your sons of Eorl/mounted Hama conversions, but the hobbbits are great too! I really like the fact that you want to make an army of hobbits :)

BTW: what putty are you using?

I've been thinking what Fatty needs and my best so far is a rolled up newspaper. He somehow won't seem right with a real weapon. Rolling pin could be an option.

Thanks for all the great feedback. Conversions are one of the things I enjoy most about the "hobby" part of the game.

The gray colored putty (Hama and some of my older ones) is ProCreate. I stopped using that when I ran out. The green putty (on the Hobbits) is just greenstuff. I don't think I've seen much of a difference between ProCreate and Greenstuff but I know others do. I probably don't do enough sculpting in consectutive fashion to notice. I go in spurts where I do a lot in a short period of time and then take months off.

I still haven't decided what to give him. This guy is representing an overweight farmer, so pretty much any farming instrument may be a suitable weapon. I am using a "stock" Fatty model for to represent Fatty.

I did some more work on these models this weekend but there isn't enough noticeable change to pull out the camera.

Thanks for all the positive feedback... I've got some more Hobbit conversions to show.

First a pair of Militia wielding pick-axes:
Image

Next up a pair of Militia with clubs converted to axes:
Image

And here's too trouble-making Hobbit's getting into Gandalf's Firework display:
Image

These next two are still in the sculpting WIP phase. First is Sam's best girl, Rosie Cotton. The base model is a halfling thief from the Reaper line:
Image

The second is Frodo posed with his arms crossed... "You're late"
Image
I'm not very happy with the arms and I'm learning as I go. I may cut them back and give them another go.

Finally, the last WIP is not truly mine but its the kick-butt Halfling Farmer model sculpted by none-other than UKFreddyBear. He's being given away at Adepticon as promotional figure for all LOTR attendees. I'll get to paint the first casts made but this is his original "green".
