Cool conversion Matt. What tools do you use for sculpting with green stuff?=)

Thanks Gandlaf - however, the mold is only for sword sheaths and quivers, not an actual mold for the rangers! As much as I wish I could make one, I just don't have the resources for that!

And thanks for looking in, Cruci - I use the following tools:

The 'official' GW sculpting tool and...

Size 0 clay shapers - well worth the price!

However, on these conversions I've been mainly using the GW sculpting tool and only using the others to smooth things over. Hope that helped!!!

I highly recommend the clay shapers. The best $20 you'll spend on sculpting tools. I have these and a hobby knife, as well as a recently home-made pin tool, and that's all you need.

Also, at first I thought that I would only use a couple of the clay shapers, but so far every one of them has been used. Buy the pack rather than a couple of individual ones, it's well worth the extra $.

I have a sculpting tool and that's it. I'd love the shapers but they are down the line for me.

You can get pretty decent results with just the sculpting tool, the key is to make sure it's wet when using it!

I have been keeping it wet and I must admit I've been fairly pleased with my amateur attempts. I will be posting my Cave Drake work soon. The joints have taken a fair bit of filling and the tip of the nose broke off, so I'm remodelling that.

Post subject:  Re: Monotone_Matt's WIP (14/03 - Various)

Once again thank you for the nice comments, everyone! They really spur me on :)

I thought I'd share some of the side projects I've been working on with spare green stuff from the 6 mounted Rangers. Unfortunately, due to uni starting up again I haven't had much time for the hobby lately and I can see things getting worse as I have a full-on, seven week placement job starting at Easter... Fingers crossed I'll find some time!

For this month's painting comp I thought I'd make a warband of WoMT with my fave sculpt ever and pride of my collection, Boromir of the White Tower. Then I fell in love with the three Osgiliath Vets I received in a trade so I thought I'd go the full hog and make a warband of converted OVs... and here they are:

(Excuse the first photo, it's terrible! )

Basically a lot of head and arm swapping - I used an old Gamling head, one of the BGiME conversion sprue and an old RotN head and interchanged a lot of spear arms with sword arms. Also added a few different weapons - one of the archers has a Rohan bow, another has a short axe strapped to his belt, one guy is carrying a mace... These guys aren't done just yet, some need a bit of wear and tear added to their armour and some raggedy sashes, cloaks or bandages adding. The conversions are a lot of fun though!

I'm a huge fan of Boromir and his sculpts, especially the Breaking of the Fellowship and, as aforementioned, the Captain of the White Tower fig. I had a feeling they were both missing out on an essential part of the character, though, so I gave them both a shield. Much better! :P

Image

I've also been gradually adding to my Witch King conversion that I showed on here a few weeks ago. Just need to finish off his arm and give him some shoulder protectors:

And lastly, all my Weathertop figures have arrived and I've been planning out my diorama piece - though if I ever get round to starting, let alone finishing, it is a different question entirely. The centrepiece will be Aragorn fending off 3-4 Ringwraiths and I wanted his pose to be a bit more dynamic, so I cut off his sword arm and remodelled a new one. I think this new pose looks quite cool and - most importantly - means his sword is held at a position which enables him to parry one of the Ringwraiths' blows without having to reposition any arms :)

Whew! That was a long post - sorry! Well done for reading all the way through, though, and thanks! :D :P

Lookin' good, though I hope you get rid of those mold lines on the OV's.

Post subject:  Re: Monotone_Matt's WIP (15/03 - Wtop Diorama - Frodo&Sam)

I sure will, avenger :) as I said, the majority of the OV still need weathering/greenstuffing (and mold line trimming!) so they're still nowhere near the finished product :)

Despite trying to have an early night I couldn't get to sleep this evening so I spent some time preparing part of my Weathertop Diorama. I've rewatched and rewatched the attack on Weathertop scene on youtube and I'm trying to go for an as identical as possible look with the film.

Here's Frodo and Sam (both from the Captured by Gondor set; S's cooking utensils and campfire cut away, F's head repositioned and treetrunk sawed away), with Frodo propped up against a ruined statue (Terrain of Middle Earth; lying statue cut away from the plastic base and then superglued together. I also added a broken Morgul Blade for good measure using greenstuff and bitz:

Still some minor greenstuffing to be done (S's left hand, joint between F's head and body...) but all in all I quite like the look of it so far :) C&C welcome as always, thanks for looking :)

looks great so far dude! Sam looks almost identical to his pose when caring for frodo in FOTR, frodos head also looks great as it looks like he is drifting in and out of consciousness. Looking forward to seeing more...good luck!
