Excellent painting, I really like the skin tone :yay:

He's a wee tad too clean for my liking though... looks as if he's had a bath at some point in his life...

I think your first Orc is the better of the two, it just looks rougher, like an Orc should. I have to agree with Sid that the second one is too clean. I appreciate you are a limited paint supply until you move but I think some drybrushing will help create the ramshackle look that's needed. A couple of dark washes will also help.
I've had a thought about the skin, how about glazing with a light green, it might just give an Orcish sort of look without going too far. You could add a touch of darker green in the recessed areas.

The orc has to humany flesh to me, perhaps it is the camera image. Still good though :yay:

Hi guys. Just a short message to say I'm probably not going to be around much for some time. The immigration process is quite demanding and then I have to find a job and a new house once I get over there. On the upside once this is all over with I'm thinking that a sweet painting area with lots of new tools and toys is the least I deserve. So I will return just not sure when. Keep up the good work and I'll see you soon.

Hi guys. I had my visa interview yesterday and I passed! To celebrate I bought some new paints and miniatures since it's a few more months before I travel.

First up is Lindir. I'm still not happy with finecast models. I find the faces are too angular and the grainy texture makes it difficult to have smooth skin and I've yet to have a model that doesn't have two pits for eyes.

Anyway it's good to be back painting again.

You've done a good job with Lindir MMS. I'm in the same boat as you with regards to the finecast issue - especially the pits for eyes. I like to spend a lot of time on faces and eyes and am yet to paint a finecast face that i am happy with. Guess we just have to keep trying.

Well done passing your visa interview mate - all the very best of luck.

The extreme highlights on the garment are somewhat splendiferous :yay:
I really really like your style of painting

Wow, he's looking great so far. I really like how you can paint such a muted style, but still have really great bright highlights. This guy reminds me of the way bizzarewarstar painted his dwarves for the warbands challenge.

In my absence I did a lot of reading on colour theory that's really helped with how I approach highlighting and shading. It was quite humbling to realise how little I knew on this subject despite painting all these years.

And yes iirc from reading his tutorials I think bizzarewarstar and I share a similar approach in using preshading and glazing techniques. This is entirely coincidental though I must say he's one of my favourite painters on here.

I had some good fortune in finding a bag of rohan guys lodged down the side of my computer :)

It's annoyed me for some time how my painting style doesn't scale down very well and because of this I have lots of unpainted army projects. And so I used these rohan infantry to test out a more effecient style.

The cloaks are my favourite part - took a few minutes each and yet they look quite respectable.

I still need to finish off the shields and bases but I think already they look a lot better then the ones I painted a few years back whilst taking a lot less time.

They look really great!
I'm curious (have to admit: for my own warriors of Rohan) what arethe colours you used for the cloth on the sleeves? Also, the hair looks fantastic. How did you colour the layers? :)

I'll say it again, I love your muted (not sure if this is the right word) painting style as it gives them a certain look I've not often seen on miniatures 8)

For the sleeves I used graveyard earth -gw then graveyard earth and bleached bone gw with a final highlight of bleached bone. For the hair I used very thin washes working from light to dark and finished with a highlight. Going from memory I did washes of desert yellow and graveyard earth followed by a highlight of desert yellow and white. This was painted neatly with quite thick paint as I prefer for off white paint. I have a brush with short bristles that I use for small details such as this. I think it's a series 333 from rosemary and co.

I really appreciate these comments. At times I look at other people's work and wish I could paint that way and forget that I have my own style that I should be proud of.

I painted a few more rohan and I'm pleased with how they turned out yet I can't help try to improve. The green on the cloaks is a little too vibrant for my tastes and so I mixed up a more subdued green with some the basecoat, ivory and blue.

The photo is rubbish I know - one of my priorities this year is to have a proper photography setup - but I think you get the idea.
