Beleive it or not, I actually used that article for inspiration! The problem was that I didn't have any sawdust... lol! And yes, I also knew it was Bart's article... I based the basic structure of the thing on his specifications, but otherwise it's all me, considering his was (sorry Bart) quite crude and simple. There are also plenty of elements that he forgot when building his beacon, such as the wooden pulley I noticed protruding out of the side facing the cliff...

Anyways, WiP woodpile will be up in a minute :)

Okay, update time! These two photos are the finished woodpile... took a looonng time to make, but I think it'll be worth it.

And this is the "dry-fit" of the model so far... I'm not looking forward to doing the 3 other pillars! :-D

Dang Pip! He's already up there, waiting for the torch to be sculpted -.- (this won't be the model I'll be using...)

Btw, does anyone have any ideas on how to paint the woodpile?
All C&C appreciated! :-D

You could pick up a can of cheap Krylon brown spray paint and use that, maybe wash/drybrush the outside pieces once its all done to add some texture.

Have fun with the pillars! :)

That's the problem, here in Chicago, spray paint and primers are illegal because of all the graffiti damage in the past :-X

Hmmm, you could try picking up a small can of wood stain, much like the stuff that they use in the "dipping" style of painting. Wash/drybrush it afterwords and use a matte varnish on it to get rid of the shine. Or you could try slopping a normal paint over it.

Sucks about the spray paint.

Edit: Can you tell I might be a bit bored at work? :-D

What's airbrush?

It's a tool for painting with. Uses compressed air to spray paint.

Is that available in Chicago?

Ooh... idk lol. But I asked my dad that when he goes on a business trip (which he is on now) he get me some spray paint and primers... hopefully he won't forget.

Great news! My dad came back from his trip with 6 cans of spray paint, all for under $5! No wonder Chicago has been having problems with taggers, spray paint is so friggin cheap! With this motivation of not having to hand paint the beacon, I've set out to finish the 3 pillars. I'm currently taking a little break from carving out the stones, but hopefully I'll be able to finish the 3 pillars by tomorrow noon at the latest. That'll give me the rest of the day to paint the woodpile (unfortunately my dad couldn't find any dark brown spray paint), and possibly do some highlighting. At this rate, I'll be finished in no time! I've also added a poll, and it'd be great if you guys could give your input :-D

Don't use spray paint on the polystyrene or it will melt due to the aerosol fumes.

Give it a coat of PVA or textured paint first.

Will it melt if it's covered with Fine Surface Filler and cardpaper?

If you don't cover it completely, then yes.

Okay, thanks for the tip :) I'll be sure to cover the gaps between rocks with a little PVA

Looking great so far mate!
Hehe, I indeed made that thing a long long time ago... My bricks are the worst mistake I did on that one... well, appart from the rope which I applied on the back of the beacon instead of in front
Back in those days I build it, I consifered doing the wooden pulley but I could't check into detail close enough to figure out what the hell it was... I couldn't cap screenshots yet so I had to use what I couldfind on the net or using the pause-key and trying to sketch it or  taking a photo of my tv, lol..; of course that didn't really help a lot ;)

Keep the piccies coming mate Looking great so far ;)!

Thanks for the positive feedback so far guys :)
I'm working on the 3 other pillars right now, so there might not be any updates for a day or so until I get them all finished... unless you want pics of the WiP pillars?
