That's really nice! Try mixing some spices ,Oregano, Parsley, chopped Basil in with some crushed cork bits (Michael's sells this). Makes a very natural forest floor. |

It is amazing how quickly you clear things off your hobby desk when you have relatives with little hands coming over. I finally finished up my cave trolls. What started with the one from the Mines of Moria set, was then added by one when I bought just the body of Ebay and added the leftover Isengard troll arms to it. I then bought the cave troll with the overhead hammer because I liked the pose. Then I got a set of two off of Ebay - with the idea of converting one throwing part of a statue. That should be enough cave trolls, but then I got another metal one with spear as part of a bigger package off of Ebay - that one I think I will put up for trade or sell. The poor dwarves finding Durin's Chamber will now have five trolls to deal with.

Look awesome, throwing a pillar is a great idea to mix it up. Looked back to what I missed in the last few months. Very cool modular scenery kits you made. |

Becoming concerned about the number of cave trolls that he might expect in Moria, Balin turned to his craftsmen and inquired about using mirrors to aid him in his quest of reclaiming Moria. I had originally thought about building a mirror on top of a cart, but the hex nut I bought was too large for the cart I have - will try again with a smaller hex nut. Bought a hex nut for 50 cents, took a couple of matchsticks for the frame and a square of heavy duty aluminum foil.  Pressed the middle of the foil into the hex nut using my finger, burnished the side of the foil a little and made a quick and dirty dwarf mirror.   The work still needs a little refinement, but not too bad for the first try. Thanks everyone for the comments on the cave trolls - still not happy on the way the arms turned out on the troll throwing the pillar but my sculpting skills aren't the best. |

Great Trolls!!! Not just good, but Grrrrrrrrreat! Like Tony the tiger says. I love the conversions and the thought process that went into them. There are a few people on here who's work is above and beyond. Count yourself among them. |

Nevinsrip, you are far too kind. OmW - I was trying to do what is shown in the Moria army book, and thought of the hex nut. Not quite what is in the book but close. I think the nut would look better with the flat side on top and bottom, with maybe a single pole holding it up, kinda like a searchlight. I need to get some magnets and play around with it more. |

I never was too happy with the bridge I had done for Durin's Chamber, did it rather quickly and while consistent with the rest of the castings, wasn't happy with the columns - felt they were too close together at the top. The thinner columns just looked like light poles to me so I kept it with the thicker columns.   The other weekend one channel on tv kept showing the first two Hobbit movies but it was catching the 1963 movie Cleopatra with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton that inspired me to go bigger. The oversize dwarf statues in the Hobbit movies plus the grand set designs in Cleopatra had me pulling out the LOTR Gimli chess piece I had bought on Ebay a while ago. Cut off the existing pillars (this is why I work in paster - no big expense but time). Might reuse the pillars elsewhere or they might just become debris.  Made a mold of the chess piece - more plaster poured, drybrushed and glued on. Feel the bridge needs to be more substantive now but that can wait for another day and more inspiration.

I am now beginning to think my problem with the dwarf bridge might have been one of proportion. While painting more moria goblins I kept looking at the bridge and thinking something still didn't look right. Cut the bridge in half and added another support and made it longer. Think it looks a lot better now (still need to paint the center piece to match the ends better) so it might have worked with the original dwarfen pillars. Will keep with the statues for now though. I really need to try things out more before rushing ahead and making things and then fixing or redoing later.

In the shaded area you could apply thin green glaze and washes to add some moss effect. |

I had been thinking about what to do with the leftover fell warg heads from the Hunters on Fell Wargs box when it occurred to me to make a battering ram - a grond lite so to speak. I cut a piece of dowel and looked at it.  I did some searching on the web and found several ideas on how to make a battering ram but I really didn't want to do something that elaborate at this point. Then I remembered I had some tree trunks that I had bought at a craft store when they were getting rid of some seasonal trees that I had taken the foliage off of and threw the trunks into my bits box.  This is where I am currently at - I cut the ears off and laid them back to give a more carved look to it, threw a base paint on and a couple of drybrushes.  Still need to paint it some more and I am in the process of cutting and re-positioning some Uruk Hai to add a crew to it. And those cursed horse-breeders think they are safe behind their gates and doors. |
