Thanks for the nice comments everyone! It's nice to be active again, more so when everyone's being so lovely haha.

Dorthonion and SD - I started the painting this evening but didn't get past their faces, I'm a bit out of practice but I think their visages are some of my best work yet (especially Boromir!)

KnightyKnight - thanks for the kind worde and glad I could inspire you!

Telchar - thanks to you too. I understand what you mean about the head thing and I ummd and ahhhd about it for a while before thinking: whatever, let's see how it turns out! And I personally think that Gondor should have taken a leaf out of Mordor's books when it came to scare tactics :P give the orks a taste of their own medicine haha!

Bartelomeus and Sid - thanks! It's not all my idea, I think I can recall seeing someone do something similar on here... Can't remember who though! And to be honest it's such a 'special' pose that there's not all that much you can do with it! :P

Corsair - such high praise, thanks a lot! I guess I just like to see what's possible and to experiment... took me ages to get round to using greenstuff after years of thinking I'd never be skilled enough to use it. I'm glad I manned up in the end and tried though :p

A quick update of my progress on my 'what if...' armoured Boromir:

His elven cloak:

I'm not entirely certain if I like it or not, but I can't put my finger on the reason why. What do you guys reckon? Does anyone have any suggestions to improve the cloak? (excuse the varying brightness, the sun kept popping behind a cloud while I was taking the photos)

And two quick shots of B's face, shield and sword:

I'm generally pleased with how he's turning out so far and would be very grateful for any suggestions about improving the Elven cloak!

Thanks guys and have a nice day!

Woot! great painting, especially the shield. And about the cloak, I agree it looks a bit "off", but why I can't say.

Thanks for the praise, Telchar! I hope to do the rest of the fig justice!

And I think I realised what was wrong with the cloak: the transitions between the folds weren't very clear, so I filed away a bit to even things out and am gonna give it a new paintjob soon! I like the look of my hooded Aragorn's cloak (page before) so gonna try and emulate that more... Here's hoping!

shield looks great, but why is it bumpyish lol? O_o

cloak is coming along nicely -i always loved the washes on the cloaks with loads of folds, so naturally id be tempted to do a wash - but it depends on ur painting style, preferences and resources i guess ;-)

What sort of wash would you recommend, Corsair? And do you mean only in the deep folds or on the entire thing?

Wash is thin so it'll flow into deeper areas like the folds on the cloak so it creates shadows where they should be, in the deeper areas ;)

Paint the cloak a base color and give the whole thing a good wash. You can play around with how much wash you use to create more or less contrast.

Please keep sculpting, youre definitely on the right track 8)

Thanks for the suggestion Bart, makes sense really if you think about it, silly me!
I think I've managed to sort out the cloak now and I'm very pleased with how he's coming along:

All he needs now is a few highlights done on the armour and some general touching up!

A quick update before I hit the hay.

Boromir is finished and looking mighty fine, if I do say so myself:

Image

Image

Image

Will probably add some gravel or rubble to his base and finish painting the side tomorrow. I reckon he's the best mini I've ever converted/painted so I'm reasonably chuffed! Definitely gonna keep him as a display piece...

However, I am very pleased with how Strider is turning out so far, as well! I went with a much darker overcoat than the GW model, like in the movie and the highlighting is some of the best I've ever done (in my view). I love the way it looks so far!

Image

Image

And finally my standard bearer has been relieved from the Orc head (you were right in the end, Telchar, it was just too gimmicky) and received a nice metal shield:

Image

All in all a very productive day (from a LotR point of view anyway, uni... not so much)! Thanks for reading and taking an interest, whomever this may concern, and good night!

Boromir's cloak looks much better after your tweaks. Excellent work! And Aragorn is coming along nicely as well.

Your Boromir is brilliant, excellent painting and sculpting, the only thing i would say about him i the sword could use a wash / highlight, it looks a little block colour now compared to the rest of the model.

I actually washed and highlighted it already (Leadbelcher basecoat, Nuln oil wash, then built up chainmail with mithril silver highlights), maybe it's just the photo! Will check it out when I get back home, thanks for pointing it out, jay!

And thanks for the nice responses, Erunion and Crucium!

Thanks, John Wayne!

Like a child with ADHD I just can't stick with one project - so here's something completely different! A big parcel arrived in the post today: A lot of more than 200 different LOTR models that I won in an online auction for a bargain! Unfortunately, the seller just bunged all the figures into a box and sent it off...

Despite being mainly interested in good armies, I couldn't resist patching up the Nazgul on a Fell Beast and adding a little twist of my own:

That's a contorted Gondorian between the FB's claws, excuse the bad lighting, it's all dark and snowy here!

Looking forward to painting it!

Poor, poor man of Gondor...

But the sculpting is as great as ever.
