Will have some time off this afternoon/evening so was thinking of doing some converting. I love it haha, I can't believe it took me so long to get round to experimenting with green stuff!
Anyway, I've got nearly a dozen Rangers of the North lying around, was thinking of making some mounted conversion, seeing as GW will probably never get round to it :P
Has anyone attempted anything similar? Any tips? I imagine I'll be amputating a few Rohirrim for their legs...
Watch this space!

Mounted rangers? That sounds very interesting indeed 8)

Thanks, I'll try and do the idea justice haha :P the idea originally came from the Ranger/Dunedain rulebook profile. If I recall correctly, they have the option to take horses...

So here's an update!

Mounted Ranger (still a bit rough and is missing bow, quiver and sword but a good start I think):

Female Ranger:

And an ambitious project I've got planned with the leftovers from the mounted Ranger and the Rohan doner. Gonna try and make an Aragorn model out of the bits and pieces, which will be quite a challenge! I'll probably give him a hood (I do like hoods) to cover up my shoddy face work:

Would love to hear what anyone thinks!

Thanks! I think my cape-sculpting is gradually becoming more and more acceptable!

By the way, thanks for the advice you gave me on Boromir, ukfreddybear (if you're reading this). I forgot to thank you back then but I tried to use your feedback this time around!

Hi,

not bad for starters, but the cloaks really looks rough at the moment! When sculpting, keep a wet sponge at hand (on a plate or something, to stop water from running everywhere), that works great to keep your tools wet and GS from sticking to the tools. That really helps me to sculpt smooth surfaces!

i like the rough looks of it, makes it look weathered and old

Thanks for the hint! As I mentioned, that's not the final product; I tend to go over the rougher parts again with a file or liquid GS. However, I'll definitely keep your suggestion in mind, could save a load of time!

Everything is in the right place. As afore mentioned, the only thing you need to improve on is getting things smoother. Do you have a cone tipped clay shaper? That would really help you.

A cone tipped shaper? No, just the official GW tool... Although, just tried some sculpting with Gunslinger's sponge trick and the results are much smoother! I guess me licking the tool wasn't wet enough haha!

Could you suggest any good cone-tips, ukfreddybear? Thanks!

These come in several sizes (like paintbrushes) so be sure to buy size 0 which is ideal for inch high minis.

I would highly recomend you get these if you are going to do any sculpting at all. I new they would be useful, but held off on buying them becuase I wanted to spend the money on other things. However, having them now, and using them, I am convinced that they are well worth the money. I have actually only used them ~3 times so far, but in those sessions I have used all of the six different ones, so it is very good to have the variety. Buy them. :)

Post subject:  Re: Monotone_Matt's WIP (14.10: The Aragorn project)

With some new sculpting tools on their way in the post (thanks for the tips, guys), I soldiered on with my soon-to-be-redundant sculpting tool. I just couldn't wait!

Aragorn's slowly taking shape; I've sculpted him a hood, a quiver, his sash-thingy and a blanket (for all those lonely nights in the wilderness). He's also received some facial reconstruction surgery, including a 'majestic' green stuff beard. I've crafted a bow from mounted Arwen's sword, which will be attached as soon as I've finished Strider's cloak.

The sponge trick really worked a treat, gunslinger, thanks! The results are much smoother in my view!

I also smoothed out my mounted Ranger and gave him some more weapons (a sword out of a strip of metal and his orginal bow). His noble steed is sporting a brand new set of reigns, too!

Phew! Feel free to make any suggestions or criticism! :)

Thanks for watching!
