I'm back into LOTR/Hobbit SBG after approximately 5 years out. The most noticeable change in the rules has been the introduction of Warbands. From what I can see, all Warbands do is restrict your Warrior:Hero ratio, without providing any real benefit.

- If not playing a specific Scenario, is it widely accepted to host games that do not follow this restriction?
- Are Warbands generally liked or disliked by the current gaming community?

I've never known a battle without the warband system. So I assume it's not widely accepted at all.

Liked for sure. The removal of Legions brought some interesting choices in army-building.

I too was pessimistic of warbands but since buying the book I have not played a single game that was not a warbands game. The 6 generic scenarios are the best ways to play the game and I urge you to try the system.

I find the new system helps prevent you getting swamped by hundreds of troops led by one hero, also it keeps your men sticking around a bit longer if there are more heroes nearby for Stand Fast!

The non-warband composition quite often brought armies with a single cheap hero and loads of troops. While the warband rules can be annoying at times (you've got 50 points left when filling out all warbands..) they can also allow/force you to field different models than you usually would (those 50 points could bring a captain without warriors, but you're more likely to upgrade a captain to some great but expensive named hero, get a banner, take some more elite troops, etc). For example, I'd never have taken Glorfindel in 500pts with the old rules, but he fits right in with the warband system.

Another advantage is that your army is set up slightly more neatly, and any dicerolls with reinforcements are a lot faster than when you rolled for every single individual model.
The rules aren't perfect, but work just fine. Would personally prefer to have it accompanied by some restrictions as far as alliances go, but at least the opposing army now very clearly indicates what kind of player you're up against. :P
