In my Gondor army, I would like to take some rangers of gondor, however I don't want any with spears.
When using the models with spears, do i have to pay the extra point with the WYSIWYG principle?

Yup. I like my rangers spear armed as it gives more tactical options.

On the contrary, I like having all my rangers with spears and hiding them behind WOMT w/shields.
I guess you could try converting them by removing the spears and sculpting a bow/sword for them.
