My mate has a Mordor army and wants to know what
tactics he can use to face cavelry and archers.

What kinda units would be good?

Does he need any archers?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Maybe Morannon Orcs and a drummer. They have high Def, get spear backup, and the drummer can get them there quickly. If you're charged by cavalry you might take some losses, but a counter-charge could be devastating.

A Mordor-troll is always a nice thing you know. He can't be knocked down by cavalry but does it the other way around. Another option would be to counter cavalry with cavalry, so he could get some wargs witch have a good attack but a low defense.

Mordor have one trick...Black Numenoreans...these will single handedly devastate a Cavalry Charge because they are terrifying, so you can pick the fights and gang up. Turn them into Morgul Knights, and with armoured horses they will be ideal for hunting down archers.

No Black Numenoreans? Maybe some Black Guard of Barad dur (sp?) with Orcs with spears as back up. :)

Mm sounds easy actually...

1. Take Ringwraiths . Especially Witch-King of Angmar, let him cast a few "SAP WILL"s on Gandalf and then cast "YOUR STAFF IS BROKEN" and Gandalf is pretty much useless then... Also "TRANSFIXING" Aragorn is a good idea, as he only has 1 attack and Fight value of 1 if transfixed and thats the point when you should swarm him...whit orcs, or what ever you have on board. Though as a side note, any warrior with a two handed weapon is great for this job, as they get +1 on the wound chart, but they will most likely win the fight anyway...

2. As for Knights, as suggested above Black Numenoreans are great, add to the TERROR they cause, a well known and feared "HARBINGER OF EVIL" rule which reduced all nearby enemies courage by one, they should get pretty much slaughtered....(All Nazgyl have this rule)

3. Bows WOULD be a good choice but as Mordor doesn´t have any decent bow shooting possibilities, then this is a "no go". But if your friend ever considers allying someone I would reccomend Haradrim Bowmen 8) great shooter, SHOOT AT THE HORSES!!!!

Actually, they do have trackers which are decent, also if you have haradrim bowmen you'll have to have 1/3 archer limitation for the haradrim as well. (so for 6 bowmen you'd need 12 other non-bow armed models from the armylist which you are taking the haradrim from.)

Everything Mouth-of-Sauron said is good IMO.
I think you would need to take the witch king / ring wraiths mounted, so they can move quickly along the battle line.

My two friends have played 2000-3000 point games a few times and every time Gandalf comes into range of 2-3 ring wraiths, Gandalf's will drops very quickly trying to resist "SAP WILL". (so funny to watch)

The fact that you have to take other haradrim with those armed with bows is fine execpt that you would lose your advantages from orc banners. The haradrim spear men are exactly the same except for +1 courage ( and no benefit from orc banners).

Aren't haradrim with bow the same cost as orc trackers but with +1D +1C +6 inch range.
Of course orc banners and drummers won't apply to the haradrim ,but in a large game I don't think this a problem if your careful. (this is the only reason I can see for taking orc trackers over haradrim)

(I have been corrected see post(s) below)

Actually Haradrim with a weapon cost a point more than a regular orc with a shield so they are more expensive, they were however cheap, but with Haradrim supplement their cost was changed...

Although Drummers "Advance!" rule does not apply to Haradrim and they will fall behind, the Banner actually works on all your troops or at least that´s how I play with banners....

Haradrim come with a hand weapon for a point less, but as there as no models armed that way you are kind of forced to give it a spear or bow, then the points is the same.
