Hey everyone. I'm StillANoob (SaN) and me and my mates are tossing up the idea of starting LOTR. A few of us have been playing 40k for a few years now, and personally I would like something different. ATM we are not sure what armies we would like to do, because we haven't read the rules and don't know how the game system works, but I'm leaning towards a Rohan army, simply because I love cavalry and the Rohan models look the best. One thing I would like to ask, does anyone know where i can get a pdf version of the rulebook? We want to read the rules and check out how the system works before we start buying models etc. but we don't want to pay $100 for a book we might read once and throw away. We of course plan to buy the hard copy of the rulebook once we decide to play, but we would like a pdf just to get familiar with the rules and check out the game system. So if anyone can tell me where I can find one that would be appreciated.

Cheers,
SaN

Welcome to the One Ring!

I'm not sure wether it's against the forum rules to give pdfs but if you go into a GW shop they should give you a small walkthrough for free. Are you wanting to play SBG (Strategy battle game) or WotR (War of the Ring)? SBG is more fun IMHO because you control individual models. Hope this helps.

Sorry but soon this will be locked ebcause it is illegal. If you want to play just buy it. It can't fail you.

Welcome to the One Ring!

As stated above, probably the best thing to do would be to just go to your local Games Workshop and play a demo game. You could also try to pick up a rulebook on Ebay... I got the smaller version (it has everything the hardback does except for terrain/modelling/painting tips) for about $7.

You might also want to just try browsing articles on the GW website to get a better feel for the game. There used to be "quick-start rules" up on the website (for War of the Ring, not the Strategy Battle Game) - I'm not sure if they're still up. It wouldn't hurt to check though.

Hope you enjoy your time in the game! 8)

Ultrageek i think its abit OTT to lock the post ;) and tbh £30 quid is alot of money to see if you would like to play the game or not...

Simple to say its against rules to post pdf copies (or request them) on the forum, just a FYI... now rather than going to ebay i have the solution!!

Solution: Go into your nearest Gamesworkshop and jsut read the rules... they seem to be ok with that, espicailly if you tell them your deciding which system to buy. (i did this to check out if i should get the battle host book (for WOTR)).

Anywho... there is a free pdf version of the pre-mentioned War of the Ring quick-start rules (grom GW) that gives a brief summary of the rules that can be found here on the Gamesowrkshop forum

Hello, you should have started a new thread really but welcome anyway :)

Regarding the rule book, i read loads of info on the forum/gw site and still didnt 'get' all the rules but felt i understood enough to enjoy it, the same you would with a video game etc, watch the video reviews etc and if still unsure play the demo/go to the shop...?

Having forked out £30 for the mom set i have scanned the book and being fortunate enough to own cs5 turned it into a page marked PDF document that now sits on the iPad.

just need to find the source book somewhere now! :(
