Great batrep!

Thanks everyone for your support!

Just before the excitement of the new Scouring of the Shire source book dropping tomorrow, I have another batrep for you all; Éomer and his Riders of Rohan attack a camp of Orcs and Uruk-hai. This is where Pippin is being held captive, as he was captured at Amon Hen.

I am pleased to say that I have progressed well with the Uruk-hai. I need to finish them and paint some Rohan houses for the next scenario, which will probably take me about a week. :)

The next scenario, Message to Edoras has been played:

Quite happy with how the Rohan houses turned out, they're quite characterful. :)

Great campaign reports though I feel like the good side is usually behind. Lol

Disappointing results -- I root for the Good guys, of course! -- but a nice battle report. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting that good keeps having it handed to them. The footnote in the original rulebook cautions the evil player that the Fellowship is overpowered compared to the evil forces due to all the special rules, and will likely slaughter him. It's neat to look back at the old books to see how the profiles have been updated.

Thanks for all your comments!

The next scenario, Hold the Fort has now been played and published:

I'm quite pleased with how the wooden fort turned out, I built it more than half a year ago but just finished (painting) it today. :)

The next scenario 'Restore the King' will be interesting because it's more like a mini-game and doesn't follow the normal rules for SBG. Unfortunately it may take a while before I get to play it, since my holiday will soon end and working life will start again. Additionally while I have already build Edoras over the past few weeks, I still need to paint it, as well as some of my favourite Hero miniatures in the game such as Gandalf the White and Théoden. So it's possible the next update may take a bit longer than usual, though I do hope to publish it before November this year.

I am happy to announce that the next scenario, Restore the King, has been played and published:

Building and painting Meduseld from scratch took quite a while. Only after I finished it did GW announced the upcoming plastic terrain which will likely include Meduseld. Still, I am very interested in this upcoming scenery, especially in the (high) palisade walls and towers, since that would be essential for Edoras.

The next scenario I can hopefully play within the next month.

As I mentioned on your site, I think the terrain is really inspiring and this report was an interesting read. Your campaign is showing me another side to this game that I wasn't aware of as well. Your terrain skills are getting better as these reports go on and I think the photography is as well. I'll be looking forward to more adventures in Rohan!

Always enjoyed that scenario in that issue, that terrain is always in the back of my mind to do.

Excellent job on building it!

Thanks everyone! :-D

The next scenario could appear a little earlier than expected. Hoping this weekend, or else the weekend after that. I'll keep you all posted of course. :)

I'm looking forward to building the castle parts for Helm's Deep over the coming weeks. Not looking forward to painting the Galadhrim. I am hoping to have played the two Helm's Deep scenarios before or shortly into 2020.

@Kuribo, sorry to say that my girlfriend didn't take any pictures this time as she was out of the house.

That looked really good. Thanks for sharing!

Do you think the scenario(s) would be any better without the endless stream of refugees? It seems like maybe only having a limited number would make it a little harder for Evil to rack up the numbers.

Dave's suggestion for altering the scenario is a great one. I'd love to see you give this one another shot with some rules tweaks to see if you can find a way to make it even more fun. This was another excellent report and very inspiring to read :)

Catching up with all your excellent battle reports. Nice job on the writing, painting, and terrain.

Post subject:  Re: DeAgostini Full Lord of the Rings campaign

Thanks for the kind words and encouragements! It really motivates me to not cut corners and keep trying my best (within reasonable and personal limits of course). :)

@DaveT, I think that would definitely help (and would also be a nice reward for having refugees actually leave the right board edge, since they are then safe). But I fear that even then the Good player has a really tough time with 20 refugees on the field and only 6 that need to be killed.

I think the most frustrating part for me was having the third skirmish have exactly the same starting positions as the first skirmish. Because the battle is almost already decided within the first three turns. So I would combine your suggestion of not having an endless stream of refugees, with different starting positions where the good side can get into the fight quicker (and requiring maybe 14 total refugees slain instead of 12). For example have the Good side have their models spread out all over the board, representing a sort of scouting patrol. Then you'll have more time for the mighty heroes to manoeuvrer into the fight, while delaying early refugee kills. That should make for more exciting and tactical gameplay.

One of the big strengths of this scenario in my opinion is the fact that it's split over three skirmishes. The second one feels really different from the first one, but the third one plays out very similarly to the first one. So I think changing the starting positions in the third one would help here as well and make it even more diverse and interesting.

Now that War in Rohan is out and I know which terrain is needed for those scenarios, I finished making parts of Helm's Deep that are needed for some of those scenarios, as well as for the DeAgostini campaign.

So I am happy to say that after a two month hiatus in playing the next part of the campaign is now available, here:

The next scenario will likely be played and published within a month.

That looked really great. The spear barrels atop the walls were an especially nice touch.

Are you going to try for a complete Helm's Deep at some point? I've got a Gatehouse, curved walls, and a Deeping wall per the Two Towers journeybook, but I haven't yet figured out how to really make a complete HD board yet. The journeybook doesn't really cover the keep inside the walls.

Post subject:  Re: DeAgostini Full Lord of the Rings campaign

Thanks! Yeah I definitely want to build a complete Helm's Deep at some point! But for now I'll stick to what's needed in these scenarios. Building a full Helm's Deep would probably take me months and quite some storage space. Right now I'm fully focused on progressing through this campaign. If I'd build Helm's Deep now I'd probably rush it and not enjoy it because I'm itching to play the next scenario. I would also not really have room to properly store it currently.

I do think there are some great examples of Helm's Deep boards out there on the web. With the release of War in Rohan we've probably received the ultimate final version of the battle for Helm's Deep, so it'd make sense to at least partially base the board on the layout there.
