Background

Lojak had his share of Orc cunning but he also possessed discipline,
rare in an Orc,and he had used both abilities to rise quickly, becoming
the young Ujak of old Gazkull's Hoerkal in memory. Now while out on
patrol in N.Ithilien,he had made a discovery, the scrub against the hill
just didn't look right. The rest of his dog soldiers were at the stream
so unnoticed he pushed aside the brush and discovered a cave,a huge
cave beyon the narrow passage.A quick look told him it was a Camp,
a Gondor secret well stocked stronghold,a valuable find!

He pulled back from his impulse to yell for his dogs...a plundered Camp
was just booty but if he could get its location to Gazkull a trap
could be planned on the unspecting enemy that could wipe
out their presence in the area.Carefully he replaced the bush & rejoined his dog soldiers,He started his patrol back telling no one ,the secret,
and the reward of telling were to be his alone.

The Orc Company had no sooner left the stream when an enemy patrol
appeared,Lojak cursed his luck but pushed his dogs forward to skirmish.
All he needed to do was break through, his dogs would clear the way
or die trying ,it didn't matter which as long as he got through
to report his secret information.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our Battle Generator gave us a Break Through Game.

Both sides start in a deployment area of 16",Evil on the left
edge in the top right and Good on the right edge about in the middle.

The Terrain Generator provided grasslands, and Table II gave us
A Spring & stream running due south in the lower left center of the board
& Hill with scrubb (Difficult Terrain)in the lower right .

Victory-If the Lojak gets off the board through the Gondor deployment
area(an 8" area).The Orcs win if not Gondor wins.No draw.The game ends
when Lojak exits the board or upon his death.

The Sides:

Gondor -Lossannach Company*

Aralorn-Sergerant-Axe/Shield
Ballen--axe/Shield
Cderic-axe/Shield
Delarion-axe /Shield
Evon-axe/Shield
Falor-axe/shield
Golsr-Bow
Heron-Bow

*These are MOG conversions, with the helmet wings filed off & the sword
replaced with an axe.Note I did these before GW did the WD ones as 2hAx.
They use MoG stats.

Orcs-Hoerkal Company(body guard type Orcs**

Lojak-Ujak-Sword /shield
Brrk-sword/shield
Coil-sword/shield
Drak-sword/shield
Ezat-spear
Fffa-spear
Gor-orc bow
Hddt-orc bow
Irap-orc bow

**These are metal orcs. The Hoerkal are body guard types to the
orc leaders,as such they are war armed with either swords or maces
unlike other orc Companies which double as laborers(pick or axes).Note
they only have the body guard special rule if their big leader is present,
Lojak as a Ujak doesn't rate. This again is ICE fluff(old ME RPG).

The Battle:

Lojak seeing the enemy wasted no time in pushing his Dogs forward, while
he dropped back to the second line with his spear guards. The Gondorians
suprised to see the Orcs between & their secret camp moved quickly to
intercept the Orcs. The archers held back & took advantage of their
greater range,Heron missed his shot but Golsr hit true but extreme range
weakned the impact & the orc kept coming.

Both sides continue to advance on each other with the archers on both
side now within range but with the rapidly moving targets none could
score a hit. Then the Orc Right charged into the Lossannach Left &
in turn the Lossannach Right hit the Orc Left & a savage melee insued.
The Orc bowman Irap was taken out but then luck deserted the
Gondorians & both Delorion & Cedric were downed.

Aralorn signaled to close the Lossannach Center & charged ,Lojak
keep his Dogs in order & met the Gondorians in another brutal
sword/axe attack. This time Ballen is cut down. The melee has
totally disrupted both lines.Lojak taking advantage of the gap
the fighting has opened now pushes through with his bowmen &
Fffa one of his spear guards. The rest of his Dogs charge the
axemen again. His bowmen loose on the Lossannach archers &
down Heron.Golsr return is wide & the Gondorians begin to waiver
from the combined Orc assults. The following melee again produces
no clear results.

Lojak now slams his foward group into Golsr and the Dogs again
charge Aralorn,Falon,Evon the remaining axemen.Golsr is taken out
& the path for Lojak wide open, the combat between the Dogs &
the axemen favors Lossannach and Coil is downed.

The Gondorians weakned nevertheless respond to Aralorn order to
charge the Orcs forward group behind them .Evon gets to Lojak, while
Aralorn takes Fffa & Falon on Brrk. The Orcs in turn close up to
take pressure off Lojak & the other attacked Orcs by charging the
Lossannach attackers.Evon staggers Lojak inspite of his having to
fight Hddt as well,Lojak manages to remain standing(Fate point)
Falon pushes back Brrk,Drak & Izat & Aralorn pushes back G'or and
Fffa ,downing Fffa in the process.

The Lossannach are exhausted,Falon can stand no more & flees,
Aralorn & Evon to struggle on.Lojak curses as again the axemen come
after him.G'or moves to charge Evon & Hddt Aralorn again taking
pressure off the Orc Ujak. The Dogs that were left behind by the
Gondorians move to attack their comrads now move up toward the
melee. The Orcs manage to push back their attackers.

Aralorn & Evon can do no more they are terribly outnumbered &
flee the field.Lojak & his Dog Soldiers way back to their lines
is open & Lojak waste no time ,he has important information
to report.Orc Victory!

Game follow up:

Lossannach Company gets 2 ex point(game & 1 inflicted wound)
Aralorn gets 3 Ex points (1 game & 2 inflicted wounds0
The Company gets 2 influence for game.

Wow those Orcs with shields are tough cookies, but they could have
been stark naked! The Good die rolls were just terrible,it looked like
Lossannach had a chance when the were able to close on Lojak
but even with several chances they just couldn't do it.Well the
Fate point was needed to save him but thats as close as Good got.

All the Gondorians recovered except Cedric whose just dead

sounds like good fun battle, but a question i'm wondering why you used the normal courage rules for this game as traditionally battle companies use the older courage rules by fleeing 6" not fleeing the board, or do you just play house rules

We do use some home rules & perfer the flee the board once
Courage fails...we just like it better than than the 6" rule which
IMO seems to produce a ping pong effect.
