I am searching for my jaw (that fell off about 10 minutes ago) and some adequate words... not only does this demonstrate original thinking and use of materials and techniques, it requires a heck of a lot of courage and determination to perform such drastic modification to a large and complex (and expensive!) miniature.

I dryfitted both of my balrogs before Christmas as I have something in mind. The fit of the parts wa disappointingly lousy, so hats off to Beate (and DB and a few others) for managing to overcome these obstacles and turn out something fantastic. The guide itself is comprehensive, very detailed, and tackles a difficult subject. The end result is fabulous.

10/10 in my book. Now, where is that dratted jaw...

Excellent - but I'm not sure why you chose to have Gandalf and the Balrog suspended from visible wires, when you could have suspended them from heavier wire rods attached to the back of the cave - and pointing forward - if you get me. This would have been a completely invisible method of suspending them.

true, true Ebob but i would think that the cardbored box wouldn't be strong enouth to hold it, expaining the wires, maybe if it was a mdf or wodden box it then should work with the rod. over all great artical Beat and hopfully many more in the future.

Wow, that looks awesome! I like how you did the water and the lighting is just perfect in some of the shots. Looks like a screenshot from the film.

Interesting guide. :)

The one thing that stood out for me within this guide, was the pure passion behind putting the whole thing together !
Never before in my 3 years here, have I seen a newcommer come along with such a fire for the hobby.
Progressing with painting skills can be a long and tedious journey, however Beatrice has come leaps and bounds since joining us.

The concept was huge and I can not recall anyone in the hobby undertaking such a bold project.

You did a great job Beate !

Definetelly not an easy project, but you did a great job!
Big convertion in a BIG (and expensive!) model, fire, water, REAAAAALLY big cave... not all starters would start and finish one of those the way you did it! ;) Cheers for that.

Now, what's next? Even bigger project?

I searched in my dictionary and found no word to describe " ultra fantasticly amazed"......and seriously, I am, it's a great project.

But, like Mac, I am weak, and must ask what your next project is.

you are all so kind... thank you so much for your nice (and funny) comments.
yep, now seeing this article finished I am astonished myself that I dared to dive into that huge project ... but when the brain is blinded by passion ... ;-)

I have to thank my both proofreaders - SamGamgee for the initial advises what to do better and DurinsBane to change my too long thoughts and improper expressions into correct English! :-)

@Dorthonion: LOL!
(found that jaw here in the abyss box trying to bite the balrog off the rope ... I throw it back over counry and channel... (sssssssssssssst.... catch it if you can...)

@Ebob: the tiny rope cannot be seen if the light is adjusted correctly. for the pics to show details or that you can see the scene at all I had to use more lights and make the pics a bit brighter, so it is visible now.

I also didn't want to drill inside both mini bodies...
and didn't know exactly where and how to hang them at first, I might readjust them, so I used the rope. Such I will be able to take the minis out and put them on a shelf if I want to (the box is very large and my vacant space in the flat limited)

Next project...? of course I am not telling you ... ;-)
it will be smaller! (okay, I have two in mind, one smaller and one, yep, a bit larger, rather higher than deeper...). The small scene I already started a thread with (Eowyn, Witchking). One member (you know that guy with that huge backlog painting guide in 2200 parts ...;-) ... gave me some ideas I have to work out ... and limit to a manageable project... (I am already watching fellbeast auctions on ebay...)

but first I have to paint some other minis. after a project taking so many days, I really missed the pleasant paintjobs on tinier figures.

ha, I bet, you were to curious about that article that you were only after to take at least a glimpse before it was published, and that your only worry was if your beloved balrogs were put in good light ;-). then you had to proofread it all on your own...

no, seriously I really owe you sth! do get proofreaders goldcoins as a compensation as well? ...

Truly excellent article, undoubtedly one of the best I've ever read.

The final effect is simply stunning

This article will surely come in handy for me, as I plan to buy this model in the future and it will be great as a source of reference.

Thanks for submitting it, I admire the effort that you took to take so many great pictures and write such an excellent article. Congrats!

Goodness me, I managed to miss commenting on this incredible article!

It's a fantastic work, Beatrice, truly inspiring. I'm too scared to modify an orc's toe, and you tackled something like this, if that you gives you an idea. And that's not mentioning the painting, which is outstanding in it's own right. The lighting on Gandalf is particularly amazing for me.

I was one of those newcomers with no real passion DB speaks of. I suppose I'm no longer new, but I still don't have any passion. On the upside, I can always admire the work of those that do, and you certainly have it "in spades", as they say. :)
